Biography

Murray B Stein MD, MPH, FRCPC is a Distinguished Professor in Psychiatry and Public Health at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). He is also a staff psychiatrist at the VA San Diego Healthcare System. Dr. Stein received his medical degree from the University of Manitoba and furthered his training with residency and fellowship at the University of Toronto and the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He holds a Master's in Public Health from the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. His research interests focus on epidemiology, neurobiology, and treatment of anxiety and trauma-related disorders, including social anxiety disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder. Dr. Stein has authored or co-authored over 800 peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals like JAMA and The New England Journal of Medicine. He has led federally funded research projects to explore interventions for anxiety disorders and the genomic aspects of these conditions. Notable projects include the Army STARRS study on suicide risk and PTSD, the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium PTSD initiative, and numerous collaborations on the genetics of depression and anxiety.
