Biography

Mykola Makhortykh is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Communication and Media Studies at the University of Bern. His research focuses on the impact of algorithmic systems on the transmission of Holocaust memory and examines the relationships between populist radical-right attitudes and political information behavior through high-choice information environments. Makhortykh employs a blend of traditional social science methods and novel computational techniques to study information retrieval systems and biases in algorithmic governing processes. With an interdisciplinary background encompassing communication science, humanities, data science, and computer science, his work explores critical topics such as traumatic memory studies, armed conflict reporting, disinformation, cybersecurity, and the effects of algorithms in digital news environments. He obtained his BA in History and MA in Archaeology from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, a joint MA degree in Euroculture from the University of Göttingen and Jagiellonian University, and a BA in Computer Science from the University of the People. Mykola completed his PhD at the University of Amsterdam, delving into the dynamics of Second World War remembrance and online platforms in Eastern Europe.
