Biography

Myrdene Anderson is a Professor of Linguistics at Purdue University, where she has been a faculty member since 1977. She received her Ph.D. from Yale University in 1978. Her research interests encompass Anthropological Linguistics, Semiotics, and Ethnological Theory, with extensive ethnographic research conducted in a range of settings, including studies of Saami reindeer-breeders in Norwegian Lapland. Over her career, Anderson has published more than 200 articles and book chapters on diverse topics and has edited several volumes covering human-animal ethology, identity, and semiotic modeling. She has been actively involved in professional societies, serving as president of the Semiotic Society of America and the Central States Anthropological Society. Throughout her academic tenure, she has received multiple fellowships and honors, including a Fulbright Visiting Professorship in Semiotics at the University of Tartu, Estonia, in 2003. Anderson teaches various courses including those in anthropology and linguistics, currently offering both undergraduate and graduate core courses in language and culture.
