Dr. Myriam Hemberger

Biography

Myriam Hemberger is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. Her research focuses on placental and reproductive health, particularly the molecular developmental genetics of pre-eclampsia, fetal growth restriction, and preterm birth. Dr. Hemberger is dedicated to understanding the significant advances in obstetrics and placental biology, with a special emphasis on disorders that are particularly prevalent among obese and older mothers. With a commitment to improving population health, her work aims to uncover the precise causes of pregnancy complications, which are often poorly understood, and to innovate treatment options that could reduce maternal and infant mortality rates. At the Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute, she is establishing new cellular models to study the earliest stages of pregnancy, utilizing placenta-derived stem cell organoid models. These approaches are at the forefront of research, offering unprecedented opportunities to investigate placental development and its relation to health and disease.
