Biography

Myrta Leslie Santana is an ethnomusicologist and performer whose work examines the social and political significance of trans and queer performance in the Americas. She is the author of 'Transformismo: Performing Trans/Queer Cuba' (Michigan, 2025), an ethnography that explores drag performance in contemporary Cuba and documents the ways trans and queer performers on the island interact with the intensifying racial, sexual, and economic inequities. In addition to her book, Santana has published essays on music and performance, gender and sexuality, and higher education in various academic journals such as 'Small Axe', 'Ethnomusicology', 'Journal of the Society for American Music', and 'Queer Nightlife' (Michigan). She is currently working on a book that traces the history and culture of trans and queer performance in her hometown of Miami, Florida. At the University of California, San Diego, Leslie Santana’s teaching focuses on expressive cultures in the Americas, racialized gender and sexuality, and ethnographic methods.
