Nadia Gargouri obtained her Doctorate in Dental Medicine in 1998. Following this, she practiced dentistry in a hospital setting for around ten years. She then completed a Master’s in Dental Sciences with a research thesis and a graduate diploma specialized in Gerodontology at Laval University. Her research led to her thesis on the impact of sodium fluoride brushing in elderly individuals with autonomy loss living in care centers, which became her first reference work in gerodontology. Fully convinced of the importance of continuing her work in gerodontology, she dedicated herself to research and joined the Centre of Excellence for Oral Health and Aging (CESBV) at Laval University in 2012, where she coordinated the center's activities. She collaborated with various partners in academia and the health network to prevent oral health problems and promote the oral health of the elderly. At CESBV, she contributed to the development of the Canadian Assessment Tool for the Oral Health of Seniors and the formulation of resources aimed at promoting oral health for elderly individuals with autonomy loss. She has also developed clinical practice guides for oral health care for adults who have suffered traumatic brain injuries, young children, the elderly, and palliative care patients. Additionally, she has provided numerous training sessions and workshops for health professionals and participated in various research projects focusing on the organization of oral health services for the elderly. Having integrated into the Quebec public service, she worked for many years as a public dental health and gerodontology advisor at the Directorate of Public Health of the Ministry of Health and Social Services. In this capacity, she contributed to multiple projects, including the development of the Quebec Program for Oral Care and Daily Oral Hygiene in long-term care facilities, as well as the Quebec Program for Supervised Tooth Brushing with Fluoride Toothpaste in educational daycare services and primary schools. She also worked at the Ministry of Health and Social Services as an executive assistant and strategic adviser to the Deputy Minister. In terms of teaching, she taught the course on gerodontology at the Faculty of Dental Medicine at Laval University for nearly ten years and developed online training for health professionals concerning oral health issues in the elderly with autonomy loss. She has also served as a lecturer for the gerodontology course at the University of Montreal since 2018. Since July 1, 2024, Nadia has been an Assistant Professor in Gerodontology at the Faculty of Dental Medicine at the University of Montreal and is determined to actively contribute to the training of future dentists who are conscientious about caring for elderly clients and strengthening research in the fields of gerodontology, public health, and access to care for vulnerable populations.
