Biography

Nadia Hebson creates paintings, objects, large-scale prints, publications, and texts that are intimately connected to the conventions and histories of painting. Her work explores the relationship between painting, biography, persona, and clothing, drawing on the legacies of women artists. She reflects on the work and lives of older colleagues such as American painter Christina Ramberg and British painters Winifred Knights and Marion Adnams, as well as sculptor Dora Gordine during her residency at Dorich House Museum. Currently, she is researching separatist proto-art schools to explore alternative methods of art education that emphasize early forms of consciousness raising. Hebson's work engages deeply with feminist literary references and employs empathy and subjectivity to offer new understandings of female experiences and the legacies of considered artists. Her creative process intertwines making, primary research, and writing, fostering a singular approach to art that emphasizes associative and speculative interpretations. By critically examining the appropriation, translation, and transposition within art historical narratives, Hebson aims to create expanded forms of painting that incorporate writing as a means of translation and resonance.
