Biography

Nadine George-Graves is a Professor at Northwestern University in the Department of Performance Studies with a joint appointment in the Department of Theatre. She serves as the Executive Co-editor of the Dance Research Journal. Her research is situated at the intersections of African American studies, critical gender studies, performance studies, theatre history, and dance history. She is the author of 'Royalty Negro Vaudeville: Whitman Sisters Negotiation Race, Gender, Class African American Theater, 1900-1940' and 'Urban Bush Women: Twenty Years Dance Theater, Community Engagement.' George-Graves has worked on numerous articles focused on African American performance and has edited the 'Oxford Handbook of Dance Theater,' a collection emphasizing border-crossing scholarship and the embodiment of theatricality. As an artist and creative, George-Graves' work intertwines with her research, exemplified by recent projects like 'Architectura,' a dance theatre piece exploring how lives are built, and adaptations of Suzan-Lori Parks' works for diverse audiences.
