Biography

Dr. Provençal completed her Ph.D. in epigenetics, focusing on early life adversity and aggression at McGill University in collaboration with the Research Unit for Children’s Psychosocial Maladjustment in 2013. After a brief postdoctoral training at the University of Montreal, she continued her research on epigenetics and child behavior. She received a research fellowship from the Canadian Institute of Health Research to complete a second postdoctoral training at the Max-Planck Institute of Psychiatry in Germany, where she explored epigenetic mechanisms involved in stress responses related to psychiatric disorders. In 2014, Dr. Provençal was awarded the Richard Todd Award from the International Society of Psychiatric Genetics for her contributions to genetics in child psychiatry. She joined the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University as an Assistant Professor in March 2017, leading the EpiGenOmics Developmental Trajectories laboratory and collaborating as an investigator with the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute and as a Guest Research Scientist at the Max-Planck Institute. Her research aims to understand the molecular mechanisms through which early life environmental exposures influence individual development, leading to health or disease. The lab employs a translational approach, utilizing multi-omic data analysis and cellular animal models to investigate long-lasting effects of early life adversities on behavioral stress-related disorders. Dr. Provençal values interdisciplinary integration from fields such as epigenetics, genetics, bioinformatics, statistics, and clinical research.
