Biography

Nael Kasri is a Professor at Radboud University, specializing in Medical Neuroscience and Neurodevelopmental Disorders. His research focuses on understanding the underlying molecular events that lead to changes in synaptic structure and function, which are crucial to learning and memory. His work aims to functionally characterize genes associated with intellectual disability (ID), characterized by synaptic deficits or synaptopathy. Recent years have seen significant progress in identifying genes linked to ID, with over 400 genes now documented. However, challenges remain in connecting genetic causes of ID to the processes that establish or modify neuronal circuit function. Learning deficits are a common feature among ID patients, often attributed to alterations in synaptic structure and function. Kasri's current research efforts involve investigating the synaptic properties that change during development and the role of Rho GTPase signaling and chromatin remodeling pathways in these processes. His multidisciplinary approach includes techniques such as electrophysiological assessments, two-photon imaging, and molecular biology methods to manipulate and characterize proteins regulating synaptic development and cognitive disorders.
