Naftali Cohn's research focuses on Jewish Ritual. His work draws rhetorical force from the literary choices made in the late-second century text, Mishnah, describing rituals performed in the Jerusalem Temple. His exploration of the Mishnah widely investigates the relationship among narrative, memory, ritual, gender, and self-construction of rabbinic authors as authoritative legal figures. Currently, he is preparing a book manuscript that seeks to understand ritual in ancient texts interpreted through the lenses of ritual theory, affect theory, and intersectional feminism. In addition, he is beginning a SSHRC-funded research project on the representation of Jewish ritual in recent film and television. He continues to work on a smaller project engaging with Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Decolonizing insights in pedagogy within the field of religious studies.
