Dr. Namkee Choi

Biography

Namkee G. Choi is a Professor and holds the Louis Ann Wolens Centennial Chair in Gerontology at the University of Texas at Austin's Steve Hicks School of Social Work. With extensive experience and a strong research focus, her work primarily revolves around geriatric mental health, particularly concerning suicide in late life, substance misuse among older adults, and the impact of mental health treatment on this population. Additionally, she explores health disparities and healthcare utilization among minority aging populations as well as the role of technology in aging services. Choi has served on the editorial boards of gerontology journals and has been an expert reviewer for several reputable journals encompassing areas such as gerontology, mental health, and social work. Her academic journey includes earning a Master of Social Work from the University of Minnesota and a Ph.D. in Social Welfare from the University of California at Berkeley. She was also trained in geriatric mental health research through the Advanced Research Institute, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Beyond her academic pursuits, Choi engages in social work that involves direct advocacy and assistance for long-term care residents and homebound older adults, and she volunteers with Meals on Wheels in Central Texas.
