Dr. Nana Osei Quarshie

Biography

Nana Osei Quarshie is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at Yale University. Quarshie’s research intersects anthropology and history, investigating the interconnectedness of mental healing practices, political expulsions, and urban belonging in West Africa from the seventeenth century onward. His noteworthy expertise has garnered support from prestigious fellowships, including the Chateaubriand Fellowship and the International Dissertation Research Fellowship from the Social Science Research Council. His writings, which delve into themes ranging from migration to mental health, are set to appear in forthcoming issues of journals like Comparative Studies in Society and History and Bulletin of History of Medicine. He is currently revising a monograph titled 'African Pharmakon: Psychiatry, Mind, and Politics in Modern Ghana.' Quarshie has also published extensively on topics such as the psychiatric implications of migration in West Africa and the historical context of confinement practices in colonial Gold Coast. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. in Anthropology and History from the University of Michigan and graduate degrees from Columbia University and the London School of Economics. His work not only resonates with scholarly pursuits but also engages with critical questions related to race, ethnicity, and postcolonial studies.
