Dr. Nancy Green

Biography

Nancy S. Green, MD, is a pediatric hematologist and professor of pediatrics at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Her expertise is focused on the diagnosis and treatment of a full range of pediatric blood disorders, with a special interest in hemoglobinopathies, particularly sickle cell disease. Dr. Green's interest in sickle cell disease began in college and has since attracted her to the clinical complexities and laboratory features of the condition, as well as research opportunities aimed at improving health for individuals affected by the disease. Her current research focuses on optimizing treatments for sickle cell disease, especially the use of hydroxyurea as the primary therapy for patients. She studies the genetic responses to hydroxyurea, adherence to therapy, and cultural aspects that affect treatment outcomes. Dr. Green is also investigating the hematologic aspects of bone marrow transplantation as a curative option for patients with sickle cell disease. Additionally, she contributes to public health by focusing on newborn screening programs that test infants for a variety of disorders, ensuring early identification and treatment of conditions such as sickle cell disease, thereby promoting healthier outcomes for affected children.
