Biography

Nancy Hermiston is a distinguished professor and a prominent figure in the field of opera education. Her operatic career spans Canada, the United States, and Europe, with her New York debut at Carnegie Hall alongside notable performers such as Marilyn Horne and Mario Bernardi. Following her European debut, she received a permanent engagement with the prestigious Nürnberg Opera. Throughout her career, she has held significant roles as a voice teacher and stage director, including at the Meistersinger Konservatorium in Nürnberg and at the University of Toronto's Opera and Performance Divisions. Hermiston became a faculty member at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in 1995, where she was appointed Coordinator of the Voice and Opera Division. In recognition of her contributions to the arts, she received the Dorothy Somerset Award for Performance Development in the Visual and Performing Arts and the Killam Teaching Prize for the academic year 2009/2010. She now serves as the Chair of the School of Music's Voice and Opera Divisions and has been honored as an Officer of the Order of Canada for her achievements as an opera singer, stage director, and educator. In addition to her academic responsibilities, she also offers private voice lessons.
