Dr. Nancy Hirschmann

Biography

Nancy Hirschmann is the Geraldine R. Segal Professor of American Social Thought in the Department of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research specializes in the history of political thought, particularly during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and also covers areas such as feminist theory, analytical philosophy, and disability theory. She has served as Vice-President of the American Political Science Association and has held various roles including vice-chair of her department and Director of the Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies Program. Her significant works include 'Freedom, Power, Disability,' which explores concepts of freedom from the perspective of disability, and 'Gender, Class, Freedom: Modern Political Theory,' which examines the intersections of gender and class in historical conceptions of freedom. Her scholarly contributions have been widely recognized, with numerous articles published in prestigious journals and awards including the 2004 Victoria Schuck award. Hirschmann has held fellowships at prominent institutions including the American Council of Learned Societies and the National Humanities Center.
