Biography

Professor Nancy Makri received her B.S. from the University of Athens in 1985 and her Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley in 1989. After serving as a Junior Fellow at Harvard, she joined the faculty at the University of Illinois in the spring of 1992. Her research interests include theoretical quantum dynamics, focusing on condensed phase processes and their applications, which encompass tunneling coherence phenomena, charge transfer in biological systems, and excitation energy transfer in molecular aggregates. The overarching goal of her research is to advance the theoretical understanding of quantum mechanical processes involving large molecules in condensed phases. Direct solutions to the Schrödinger equation become impractical for larger molecules, necessitating the development of numerically exact, fully quantum mechanical real-time path integral methods. These developments aim to enhance the exploration of tunneling phenomena, energy transfer, and spin dynamics in complex biological and molecular systems.
