Biography

Nancy Rotering, elected mayor of Highland Park, Illinois, has reformed city government by fostering a culture of transparency, collaboration, and ethics. With 30 years of experience as an attorney, she is a graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, holds an MBA from Northwestern University, and a BA in Economics from Stanford University. Nancy practiced law at McDermott & Emery in Chicago, focusing on health care fraud and abuse. After being elected as mayor in 2015, she founded the North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic, which provides free legal services to ensure equal access to justice for Northeastern Illinois residents dealing with housing, immigration, and domestic violence issues. In 2014, Today’s Chicago Woman honored her as one of the “100 Women of Inspiration,” and she was included in Forbes' “Forty Under 40” list. In 2022, she received several awards, including the Harriet Tubman Award and the Defender of Democracy Award. Nancy is also recognized as an Outstanding Instructor at Northwestern’s School of Education and Social Policy. She actively participates in local governance as an Executive Committee member of the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus and the U.S. Conference of Mayors, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning.
