Professor Nancy Thebaut is an Associate Professor at the University of Oxford's Faculty of History, specializing in European medieval art and architecture. Her research interests include the interplay of works of art, ritual practices, and theology, particularly from 800 to 1200 AD. Thebaut's current book project, 'Lessons in Looking: Difficult Images of Christ, ca. 850-1050,' examines narrative images in liturgical manuscripts that depict critical moments of seeing Christ. She is particularly focused on the image of Lot’s wife turning into a pillar of salt as she looks back at the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, exploring how artists engaged with the visual perception of belief and its challenges. In addition to her research, Thebaut is committed to making art history accessible to a broad audience through curatorial projects, including an upcoming exhibition at the Cloisters (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York) on gender, sexuality, and love in medieval art, co-curated with Melanie Holcomb. Her previous academic positions included Assistant Professor of Art History at Skidmore College. She holds a PhD from the University of Chicago, an MA from the École du Louvre/Courtauld Institute, and a BA from Agnes Scott College. Thebaut's work has been supported by various grants, including a Fulbright Scholarship and a Kress Foundation Fellowship.
