Biography

Naola S. Austin M.D. is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Pain Medicine at Stanford University. She co-directs the Anesthesia Crisis Resource Management (ACRM) course and serves as faculty for multiple simulation courses at the Center for Immersive Simulation-based Learning. Dr. Austin is also a point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) faculty member, specializing in neuraxial, transthoracic, lung, gastric, and FAST ultrasound techniques. Furthermore, she contributes to the Stanford Anesthesia Cognitive Aid Program (SACAP), which works on designing and updating the Stanford Emergency Manual. Originally from New Mexico, Dr. Austin obtained her medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College in New York. She completed her residency in Anesthesiology at the University of Washington and subsequently pursued dual fellowship training in Obstetric Anesthesia and Healthcare Simulation. In her capacity as Co-Primary Investigator at the Safety Learning Lab, she has published articles related to synapse biology and clinical reviews on cervical spine injury, trauma, and burns. Dr. Austin has received several honors, including being named a U.S.-E.U. Exchange Scholar and a Rogers’ Colloquium Speaker. She is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and has been recognized as a Foundation Anesthesia Education & Research Scholar. Outside of her professional commitments, Naola enjoys gardening, cycling, and rock climbing.
