Biography

Naomi Haynes is a social anthropologist working at the intersection of religion and political economy. Her research explores how religious ideas, practices, and structures interact with the non-religious parts of life. Haynes has conducted ethnographic research in Zambia, focusing particularly on the impact of Pentecostal Christianity and the so-called 'prosperity gospel' on urban Zambian social life. This work illustrated how Pentecostal adherence enabled believers to develop new forms of patron/client relationships, especially compelling in mining communities affected by economic fluctuations. Her major research project led to the publication of the book 'Moving Spirit: Pentecostal Social Life in the Zambian Copperbelt'. Haynes is also examining the work of Christian nationalist activists in Lusaka, exploring how Christian ideas have been mobilized by the Zambian government. Her research has been supported by the Economic and Social Research Council and the British Academy. Haynes's monograph 'Divine Season: Christian Nationalist Activism in Zambia' is set to be published by Princeton University Press in 2026. She is a co-editor of the monograph series 'New Directions in Anthropology and Christianity' with Bloomsbury Academic Press and curates an online project dedicated to exploring themes of Christian nationhood through text and multimedia installations.
