Dr. Naomi Head

Biography

Professor of International Relations at the University of Glasgow, Naomi Head has a rigorous academic background, having previously held positions at the University of Leeds as a Lecturer and served as an ESRC Postdoctoral Fellow at Aberystwyth University. Her research primarily investigates the narratives of conflict, politics of empathy, and emotions within the contexts of war and occupation. A notable project, the Leverhulme Research Fellowship titled 'Empathy Fire: 'Hearts and Minds' Politics of Empathy', explored emotional dynamics in military contexts, particularly under U.S. operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and delves into the intersection of culture and counterinsurgency. Professor Head has been actively involved in research concerning NATO’s interventions in Kosovo and has utilized Habermasian critical theory to analyze legitimacy and ethical dimensions of warfare. She co-founded the British International Studies Association Working Group on Emotions in Politics and has held roles such as an Associate Practitioner for the Centre for Good Relations in Scotland and a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Global Cooperation in Germany. Her teaching encompasses undergraduate courses on International Relations and postgraduate classes focused on humanitarian interventions, reflecting her commitment to incorporating innovative pedagogical methods into her curriculum.
