Biography

Naomi Richards is the Director of the End of Life Studies Group at the University of Glasgow and a Senior Lecturer in Social Science. With a background as a social anthropologist, she specializes in the study of dying, death, aging, and employs visual ethnographic methods. Over the decade, she has published more than 30 peer-reviewed articles in various social science and clinical journals and has contributed to 6 book chapters. Her research includes funding to investigate visual representations of aging and older women, as well as the assisted dying debate in the UK and the relationship between assisted dying and palliative care globally. From 2019 to 2023, she led the Dying Margins study, focusing on reasons for unequal access to home dying for individuals facing poverty and deprivation. This project resulted in an exhibition called 'Cost of Dying' displayed at various locations including the Scottish Parliament in 2023. Currently, she continues researching financial hardship at the end of life within rural Scotland through the Marie Curie-funded 'Unreached' study set for 2024-25. Additionally, Naomi co-leads the DeathWrites research network that supports writers in exploring themes of death and grief, culminating in a forthcoming public symposium in June 2024. She teaches several courses within the End of Life Studies Programme, including a unique microcredential developed alongside the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.
