Biography

NaRi Shin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sport Management at the University of Michigan's School of Kinesiology. Prior to joining U-M, Shin held faculty positions at Texas Tech University and the University of Connecticut. She earned her PhD in Recreation, Sport, and Tourism from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where her dissertation focused on globalization and community development in Daegwallyeong-myeon, a rural town in South Korea that was significantly involved in the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. Her dissertation received recognition as the 2019 Illinois Dissertation Award for Traditional Qualitative Research and won the 2019 Student Research Competition by the North American Society for Sport Management. Shin's research primarily addresses sport development, globalization, and cross-cultural interactions, aiming to enhance understanding of how these elements shape sport management and development across different continents. She has contributed to various academic journals, including the Journal of Sport Management and Communication & Sport, among others. Currently, her research explores sport participation within diasporic and minoritized communities in the United States, emphasizing the dynamics of cultural interactions and sport-based movements among athletes.
