Biography

Natalia Brizuela is a Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and the Department of Film and Media at the University of California, Berkeley. Her work focuses on photography, film, contemporary art, critical theory, and aesthetics, particularly in the context of Spanish America and Brazil. She is the author of several notable books, including 'Fotografia e Império: Paisagens para um Brasil Moderno' (Cia das Letras, 2012), which investigates 19th-century photography in Brazil and its relation to modern state formation and nationalism. Another significant work, 'Depois da fotografia: Uma literatura fora de si' (Rocco, 2014), explores contemporary literature and its interactions with photographic languages and materialities. She has curated exhibitions, such as the solo show of Brazilian artist Nuno Ramos and is currently preparing an exhibition of Waldemar Cordeiro's work. Her ongoing research includes a book-length project examining contemporary photographic production and critiques of aesthetics in the modern paradigm.
