Natalia Mora Sitja is an Associate Professor in Modern European Economic History at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Downing College. She joined the Faculty of History in 2005 after training as an economist and developing an interest in history, specializing in economic history. Her research primarily investigates the interactions between economic growth and labor markets in the past, focusing on how technological innovations, migration, and economic structural changes impact labor market institutions and working conditions. She examines the wage formation system and the relative availability of skilled workers, which are critical to understanding the paths countries have taken towards economic development. Her doctoral work analyzed the development of the Catalan industrial workforce during the long 19th century, exploring the effects of industrialization on wage structures and resulting in several papers discussing rural/urban wage gaps and labor market integration. Currently, her research also emphasizes gender and structural economic analysis, using historical data for international comparisons to highlight gender-related variables in national economies. She supervises graduate students working on topics related to European economic and social history from c. 1750 to the present, particularly those involving inequalities, labor markets, women's work, migration, Spanish history, and quantitative analysis. Professor Mora Sitja also teaches parts of the History curriculum and convenes specific courses concerning economic history.
