Biography

Natalie Khazaal is an Associate Professor at the School of Modern Languages at Georgia Tech, where she also serves as the director of the Arabic and Middle East & North Africa programs. She was a fellow at the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) and has done significant work focusing on Arab atheists. Khazaal received her doctorate in Near Eastern Languages and Cultures from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Her research examines how disenfranchisement, media, and language affect various communities, particularly within Lebanon and among Arabic-speaking populations, including refugees and non-human animals. Her book, 'Pretty Liar: Television, Language, Gender Wartime Lebanon' (Syracuse, 2018), investigates media's role in shaping public perceptions during violent crises in Lebanon. She has also published on the interplay between speciesism and media and co-edited works on critical animal studies. Khazaal is passionate about teaching topics related to Arabic culture, media, and globalization, aiming to develop students' critical thinking and cultural tolerance. Additionally, she has played key roles in initiatives supporting refugees and has been involved with various educational and non-profit organizations.
