Biography

Natalie Yalda is a PhD candidate and Associate Lecturer at the School of Optometry and Vision Science at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). Her research focuses on improving the detection, diagnosis, and monitoring of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). She is developing highly translatable tools to assist optometrists in identifying individuals at high risk of vision loss due to AMD. Natalie's doctoral studies particularly emphasize enhancing prognostic biomarker assessments and promoting home monitoring strategies for patients. She began her academic career in the field of Medical Science, having completed her Bachelor of Science degrees in Vision Science and Anatomy/Pathology at UNSW. Natalie's teaching philosophy revolves around fostering an engaging learning environment, making complex concepts understandable for students. She has taught a variety of courses across the faculties of Medicine and Science at UNSW and has been involved as an educator in the Pathology Museum of Human Disease.
