Biography

Nathalie Fernando is a full professor of ethnomusicology and the Dean of the Faculty of Music at the Université de Montréal. She graduated from Université Paris-Sorbonne – Paris IV and has been a co-researcher for the strategic grouping of the International Observatory of Creation and Research in Music. She is also a member of various organizations, including the BRAMS (International Research Laboratory on Brain, Music, and Sound), the French Society of Ethnomusicology, and the International Council for Traditional Music. From 2005 to 2015, she held the Canada Research Chair in Ethnomusicology, a position shared between the Faculty of Music and the Department of Anthropology at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Fernando has collaborated with the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Medicine to develop the 'Music for Children' program in conjunction with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. Over the years, she has served in various academic capacities, including as Associate Dean for Theoretical Studies and Research from 2011 to 2018 and as Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs. Her research focuses on the impact of globalization on musical heritage, the integration of musical heritage into tourism, and the categorization of musical forms.
