Biography

Nathalie Smuha is an Adjunct Professor at New York University School of Law and an Assistant Professor at KU Leuven Faculty of Law. Her scholarship lies at the intersection of law, philosophy, and technology, with a particular focus on the impacts of artificial intelligence on human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. She is the author of 'Algorithmic Rule of Law: Algorithmic Regulation in the Public Sector Erodes the Rule of Law,' set to be published by Cambridge University Press in 2024, and the editor of the 'Cambridge Handbook of Law, Ethics, and Policy on AI' (2025). Smuha's work has been recognized with awards and featured in international news articles. She regularly advises governments and international organizations on AI policy, having worked with the European Commission and coordinated efforts of the High-Level Expert Group on AI to contribute to the EU’s AI strategy. Additionally, she is a member of the OECD Network of Experts on AI and has served as a scientific expert with the Council of Europe’s Ad Hoc Committee on AI, where she drafted an International AI Treaty. She is a qualified attorney in Brussels and a member of the New York Bar.
