Biography

Professor Brown received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2008 and began his academic career as an Assistant Professor at UC Davis. He has been at Concordia University since 2015, where he holds a Canada Research Chair in Poetics. As the founding Director of the Centre for Expanded Poetics, his research encompasses literature, philosophy, and the arts, with a particular focus on comparative approaches to modern poetry and poetics. His current book project, "Irony Ground: Studies in Poetics Romantic Modernity", supported by an SSHRC Insight Grant, explores the concept of romantische Poesie through various case studies in poetry, fiction, music, architecture, painting, and cinema. In 2021, he published "Rationalist Empiricism: Theory Speculative Critique", which argues for a rethinking of the methodological relationship between rationalism and empiricism. His previous works include "Limits of Fabrication: Materials Science Materialist Poetics" (2017) and the translation of Baudelaire's "Les Fleurs du mal" (planned for 2025). Professor Brown's scholarly contributions include many articles and chapters exploring the intersections of poetics and critical theory, reflecting his deep engagement with modern philosophy and aesthetics.
