Biography

Nathan Cheung is an Associate Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at Duke University, specializing in pediatric eye care. He serves as the Program Director for the Pediatric Optometry Residency and Externship Programs. His clinical interests include strabismus, amblyopia, infant aphakia, and pediatric myopia control. Dr. Cheung is actively involved in multi-center clinical trials with the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group (PEDIG), serving as the principal investigator for several NIH and industry-sponsored studies at Duke. He completed his Doctor of Optometry degree at the University of California, Berkeley, followed by a residency in Pediatric Optometry at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Since joining Duke in 2016 as a medical instructor, he has been promoted through the ranks to Associate Professor by 2025. As a dedicated educator, he is instrumental in residency training, focusing on amblyopia management and pediatric contact lens use. Dr. Cheung has mentored many students and residents and frequently presents at national conferences, including the American Academy of Optometry. His scholarly contributions include numerous peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and articles, particularly on amblyopia treatment and pediatric ocular imaging. He has received the Excellence in Medical Education Award in 2025 and is committed to improving access to pediatric eye care and advancing research in childhood eye diseases.
