Biography

Nathan Coombs is a Senior Lecturer in Economic Sociology at the School of Social and Political Science at the University of Edinburgh. His research focuses on the implications of scientized knowledge and expertise for public accountability and democracy, particularly at the intersection of political economy, science and technology studies, and social theory. Coombs employs qualitative historical methods to explore contemporary issues involving central banking, financial governance, and the regulation of financial algorithms. Coombs has successfully led numerous research projects and grants, notably working with prestigious funding bodies such as the Leverhulme Trust and the Economic and Social Research Council. He co-founded the Finance Society, an interdisciplinary journal published by Cambridge University Press, and serves as its Director, overseeing annual conferences. In addition to his research, Coombs has a dedicated teaching role, supervising PhD students and coordinating courses such as Sociology of Freedom and Economic Sociology.
