Biography

Nathan S. Lewis, George L. Argyros Professor at the California Institute of Technology, has made significant contributions to the fields of photoelectrochemistry and chemical vapor sensing. He earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Caltech in 1977, followed by a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1981. His research group focuses on semiconductor photoelectrochemistry and the development of electronic noses, which employ arrays of chemically sensitive conducting polymers for the detection of various analytes. Throughout his career, he has been involved in the education of students in chemistry, offering courses that blend theory and practical application on semiconductor technologies. His ongoing research interests include optical and electronic properties of semiconductors, water oxidation, and hydrogen evolution catalysis, among others.
