Nathan K. Lujan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Toronto. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Calvin University and a PhD from Auburn University. His research focuses on the evolutionary origins of genetic, phenotypic, and taxonomic diversity in freshwater ecosystems, particularly in rivers, streams, and fishes of tropical South America as well as the Laurentian Great Lakes. Lujan is especially concerned about the paradox of streams and lakes that contain more than half of the world’s water while hosting a quarter of vertebrate species and half of fish species. He emphasizes the urgency of pollution and habitat destruction that threaten freshwater habitats globally, leading to the potential extinction of numerous freshwater fish species. As an Associate Curator of Fishes at the Royal Ontario Museum, he oversees Canada’s largest collection of preserved fish specimens and tissues. His work involves collaborative biodiversity surveys and inventories in South America, contributing to the description and classification of new species. Lujan collaborates with Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans to address management questions related to aquatic invasive species. He is dedicated to advancing understanding of healthy freshwater ecosystems and their crucial role in human and wildlife well-being.
