Biography

Nathan Shaner is an Associate Adjunct Professor in the Department of Neurosciences at the University of California, San Diego. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Physics from Oberlin College in 1999 and his Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from UC San Diego in 2006. Following his doctoral studies, he conducted postdoctoral research at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, focusing on fluorescent biosensors, and at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, specializing in luciferin biosynthesis and bioinformatics. His research interests include developing novel bioluminescent tools for neuroscience applications, such as engineered photostable fluorescent proteins and advanced imaging techniques. He has received multiple research grants from the NIH and the NSF for projects aimed at enhancing our understanding of neural circuitry through innovative imaging methods and the development of bioluminescent indicators for neurotransmitter signaling.
