Biography

Natura Myeku is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology and Cell Biology at Columbia University Medical Center. She is a neurobiologist who leads a research laboratory focused on understanding the regulation of the proteasome system in Alzheimer's disease and other proteotoxic diseases. Her research interests include elucidating the mechanisms underlying deficient protein quality control in neurodegenerative disorders, with a particular focus on the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS), which is crucial for protein turnover in mammalian cells. The 26S proteasome, a multi-catalytic and ATP-dependent protease, is central to her research, as its dysfunction in neurons is a contributing factor to the accumulation of oligomers and aggregates, common hallmarks of various neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Myeku's work aims to propose translational therapies targeting the proteasome to prevent or delay age-related diseases.
