Nava Tintarev is a Full Professor in Explainable AI at Maastricht University in the Department of Advanced Computing Sciences (DACS). As a member of the Explainable AI (XAI) research theme, she focuses on providing explanations for AI-driven systems. She completed her PhD in 2010 at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. Her research has been funded through a variety of projects, particularly in human-computer interaction and artificial advice-giving systems, including recommender systems where she works on developing state-of-the-art automatically generated explanations and explanation interfaces to enhance transparency and user control. Her notable projects include the EU Marie-Curie ITN on Interactive Natural Language Technology in Explainable AI with a funding of 2.8 million euros. Tintarev is also a founding Co-Investigator of the ROBUST consortium that supports a long-term (10-year, ~95M) research initiative in trustworthy artificial intelligence. She serves as co-lab director of the TAIM lab, which focuses on trustworthy media in collaboration with UvA and RTL. In addition, she is an active member of several national and international scientific research initiatives, including the IPN board, NWO-ENW domain advisory committee for Computer Science, and various editorial boards for academic journals. As a senior member of ACM, she regularly examines PhD dissertations and reviews both national and international grant proposals.
