Dr. Nava Tintarev

Biography

Nava Tintarev is a Full Professor in Explainable AI at Maastricht University's Department of Advanced Computing Sciences (DACS). She serves as the director of research and is a key member of the Explainable AI (XAI) research theme, an interdisciplinary area dedicated to providing comprehensive explanations for AI-driven systems. With her PhD completed in 2010 at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, her research has been pivotal in advancing projects centered around human-computer interaction and artificial advice-giving systems. She's known for developing state-of-the-art methods for generating automatic explanations and transparency interfaces. The impact of her work is notable, having been funded by significant projects such as the EU Marie-Curie ITN on Interactive Natural Language Technology and Explainable Artificial Intelligence, amounting to 2.8 million euros. She operates as a founding co-investigator in the ROBUST consortium, which sustains a 10-year, 95 million euro research initiative on trustworthy artificial intelligence. Additionally, Tintarev co-leads the TAIM lab, focusing on responsible media in partnership with RTL and UvA. As a senior member of the ACM, she is actively involved in shaping scientific research programs both nationally and internationally, contributing to various strategic boards, workshops, and committees within the domain of computer science.
