Biography

Navtej Toor is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, San Diego. He received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Calgary in 2004, where he studied the structure and function of non-coding regions in prokaryotic and eukaryotic genomes. Dr. Toor's research primarily focuses on the genetic elements within these genomes, particularly introns and retroelements, highlighting their evolutionary significance. His work on the crystal structure of group II introns has contributed insights into the active site of ribozymes, revealing important structural motifs and biochemical features shared with spliceosomal introns. In addition to his research, Dr. Toor is committed to mentorship and outreach, actively promoting the inclusion of underrepresented groups in science. He has served on the graduate admissions committee to enhance the recruitment of minority candidates in graduate programs. He believes that anyone can excel in research when provided with the right intellectual environment.
