Biography

Naweed Syed is a professor in the Department of Cell Biology & Anatomy at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. His research focuses on defining fundamental cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying nervous system development and synaptic plasticity. He aims to identify genes that are part of the molecular cascade allowing neurons to extend projections to establish neuronal connectivity. Additionally, his lab has developed neuron-chip recording techniques to monitor neuronal activity in large networks of brain cells with single-cell resolution. Dr. Syed's work also investigates the impact of extrinsic factors on neuronal synaptic plasticity.
