Biography

Nayibe Inocencia Bermudez-Barrios received her Ph.D. in Latin American Literatures and Cinemas from the University of Kansas in 2004 and joined the University of Calgary in 2001. Her research focuses on twentieth- and twenty-first-century Literatures of Latin America, with an emphasis on genre, gender, social space, biopolitics, and cinema through the lens of transnationalism and extractivism. She authored the book 'Sujetos Transnacionales: la negociación en cine y literatura' (2008), analyzing how upper-class women from diverse ethnic backgrounds navigate restrictions within narratological, social, economic, and political environments. Additionally, she edited 'Latin American Cinemas: Local Views, Transnational Connections' (2011), which presents case studies of significant Latin American films from the twentieth century, deeply exploring the meanings of transnationalism. Her current projects include papers on 'Dystopia in Latin American Cinemas,' the impact of Netflix on Latin American cinema, and a manuscript titled 'Gender and Genre in Latin American Cinemas.'
