Biography

Nayrouz Abu Hatoum is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Concordia University. She was a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University in 2018/2019. Her research explores visual politics in Palestine, focusing on alternative imaginations and people’s place-making in the context of settler-colonialism. Currently, she is working on an ethnographic project that examines the role of visual arts in expanding Palestinians' imagination. She is a founding member of Insaniyyat, the Society of Palestinian Anthropologists, and is fluent in Arabic and Hebrew in addition to English. Her research interests include visual anthropology, urban ethnography, visual art politics, liberation, sovereignty, settler-colonialism, resistance, everyday life, Palestine, South West Asia, and queer politics. Over the years, Nayrouz has received funding and grants for her research, including a grant from Fonds de Recherche du Québec - Société et Culture (FRQSC) for her project titled 'The Art of Visual Politics: Tracing, Making, Imagining Palestine.' She has published various articles and book chapters in esteemed journals and publications, contributing to the discourse on Palestinian identity, visual culture, and resilience against colonial narratives.
