Biography

Nazafarin Lotfi is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work explores the intersections of body, space, and notions of belonging, presence, and identity formation. Her artistic practice encompasses sculptural forms, architectural drawings, and performative photography, addressing the hierarchies inherent in formalism, aesthetic subjectivity, power, worth, and ability. Lotfi received her Master of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2011 and her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Tehran in 2007. She was awarded the 2023 Eliza Moore Fellowship for Artistic Excellence, and her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in notable venues including Artpace in San Antonio, TX; Regards in Chicago, IL; and the Phoenix Art Museum, AZ, among others. During 2021-22, she served as the Matakyev Research Fellow at the Center for Imagination in Borderlands at Arizona State University. Her practice has received support from the Arizona Commission on the Arts as well as various grants and awards, including the Sally & Richard Lehman Award from the Phoenix Art Museum in 2019. Lotfi is also the founder of the Hamrah Ars Club, a creative placemaking program dedicated to mentoring refugee-status youth.
