Biography

Dr. Nazgol Bagheri was born in Tehran and began enjoying the complexity of urban landscapes during high school while observing the city from a bus. She received her Bachelor of Architecture in September 2004, Bachelor of Computer Science in September 2006, and Master of Urban Design in November 2007 from the National University of Iran (Shahid Beheshti). Dr. Bagheri worked as an architect on urban projects for an international design firm from 2004 to 2007. She earned her interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Geography and Sociology from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2013. Dr. Bagheri is interested in navigating the disciplinary terrain of Geography, Urban Planning, and Social Anthropology to develop a theoretical model that accounts for changes in the use of design in public spaces, the unique relationship between aesthetics and modern planning, gendering spatial boundaries, and the contingent nature of public space in Middle Eastern contexts. She serves as the Graduate Program Coordinator for the Geography Environmental Sustainability Program and is also the organizer of the international GIS Day celebrations. Dr. Bagheri is a proud recipient of the 2017 President's Distinguished Teaching Excellence Achievement Award from UTSA.
