Dr. Ned Blackhawk

Biography

Ned Blackhawk (Western Shoshone) is the Howard R. Lamar Professor of History at Yale University, where he has taught since 1999. He completed his Ph.D. in History at the University of Washington in 1999, after obtaining a Master’s Degree from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1994 and a Bachelor of Arts in Honours History from McGill University in 1992. His scholarship focuses on Native American history and law, with significant works including 'Violence over the Land: Indians and Empires in the Early American West,' published by Harvard in 2006. Blackhawk’s research has received numerous accolades including the Frederick Jackson Turner Prize from the Organization of American Historians and the John C. Ewers Award from the Western History Association for his contributions to North American Indian Ethnohistory. He has held various leadership roles in professional associations, including serving on editorial boards for American Quarterly and Ethnohistory. His work also emphasizes the importance of supporting Native American students in academia, as exemplified by his development of fellowships for American Indian students at historical conferences. Blackhawk is a prominent voice in Indigenous studies, contributing to a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding Native American histories and experiences in the American West.
