Biography

Neil Craik is a Professor of Law at the University of Waterloo, with appointments to the School of Environment and Enterprise Development and the Balsillie School of International Affairs. He teaches and researches in the fields of international and Canadian environmental law. His current research examines the legal structures of global commons regimes, with particular interests in deep seabed mining regulation and climate geoengineering law and governance, as well as environmental impact assessment. Craik is the co-author of 'Liability for Environmental Harm in the Global Commons' (Cambridge University Press, 2023) and 'International Law and Environmental Impact Assessment' (Cambridge University Press, 2008). His work has been published in leading international law journals, including the International and Comparative Law Quarterly, the Chicago Journal of International Law, and interdisciplinary journals such as Science, Climate Policy, and Marine Policy. From 2011 to 2017 and from 2022 to 2024, he served as the Director of the School of Environment and Enterprise Development at the University of Waterloo.
