Dr. Neil Guppy

Biography

Neil Guppy is a distinguished professor emeritus of Sociology at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He has held numerous leadership roles at the university, including Head of the Department of Sociology, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and Associate Vice-President of Academic Programs. Guppy joined UBC in 1979 and is a recipient of the University Killam Teaching Prize and the University Killam Research Prize, recognizing his excellence in teaching and scholarly work. His research focuses on core sociological themes such as social inequality and education, with recent work addressing issues of gender inequality. Guppy has authored and co-authored influential books and articles, including 'Schooled Society: Introduction to Sociology of Education' and 'Successful Surveys: Research Methods in Practice.' He is well-regarded for his research on social inequality in Canada and has made notable contributions to topics like gender equity and the evolving landscape of Canadian education. In 2016, he received the Canadian Sociological Association’s Outstanding Contribution Award, reflecting his significant and lasting impact in the field. Currently, Guppy is working on several projects related to gender equity, naming patterns among Canadian children, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on higher education, and public opinion on feminism in Canada.
