Biography

Neil D. Kamil is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Texas at Austin. He received his Ph.D. in 1989 from Johns Hopkins University. Kamil’s scholarship focuses on the history and culture of the Atlantic and Mediterranean worlds from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century, with a special emphasis on material culture, artisans, and the history of science. He is the author of 'Fortress Soul: Violence, Metaphysics Material Life Huguenots' New World, 1517-1751' (The Johns Hopkins University Press, 2005). His recent publications include contributions to the edited volumes 'Protestant Empires: Globalizing Reformations' (Cambridge University Press, 2020) and 'Crafting Enlightenment: Artisanal Histories Transnational Networks' (Oxford University Studies in Enlightenment Series, Liverpool University Press, 2021). Kamil has received fellowships from prestigious institutions, including the Winterthur Museum and the American Antiquarian Society, and is currently working on a book exploring Atlantic refugee artisans' experiences with materials during the early modern and early industrial periods. His teaching includes a range of courses on Atlantic history, focusing on the interplay of culture, art, and science.
