Biography

Neil Lagali is a Professor of Experimental Ophthalmology at Linköping University, specializing in corneal research and the pathogenesis of blinding diseases. His research group investigates the underlying mechanisms that lead to corneal neovascularization, using experimental models to gain insights into angiogenesis. The group is actively working on developing new regenerative treatments and surgical techniques for patients with corneal diseases, characterized by advanced clinical studies and imaging techniques. Current projects include understanding the mechanisms of corneal neovascularization, utilizing non-invasive imaging of nerve fibers in the cornea as potential biomarkers for diabetes, and conducting molecular genetic studies on European cohorts with aniridia. Lagali’s lab has been at the forefront of experimenting with femtosecond laser-based corneal surgeries to evaluate wound healing responses and adapt surgical methods to minimize trauma to the cornea. He collaborates with Senior Lecturer Mehrdad Rafat in bioengineering materials to enable long-term vision restoration. His ongoing involvement in the STEM-CORE project highlights his commitment to training the next generation of experts in eye therapy, focusing on sustainable stem cell treatments for corneal blindness. Lagali is also part of the Restore Vision project aimed at developing and testing new treatments for rare eye diseases across Europe.
